Hel โ Goddess of the Norse Underworld
In Norse mythology, Hel is the daughter of the cunning god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. She rules over Helheim, the realm of the dead where the souls of those who have not fallen gloriously in battle reside. Hel is often described as half alive and half dead โ a living symbol of the transition between life and death.
During Ragnarรถk, the great destruction of the gods, Hel plays a crucial role: she sends out her hordes of the dead, traveling on the ship Naglfar, built from the nails of the dead, to meet the gods in the final battle. Hel herself does not fight, but her power is manifested in the vast army from the underworld that contributes to the fate of the world.
Hel stands for inevitability and change, for the certainty of death but also for life's eternal cycle of endings and new beginnings. Her name later became synonymous with the underworld itself โ a realm of stillness rather than torment.
