Yggdrasil – The World Tree that supports all worlds

At the heart of Norse mythology stands Yggdrasil, the mighty world tree. It is described as an enormous ash tree whose branches stretch across the sky and whose roots reach down into the deepest realms. Yggdrasil is more than a tree – it is the very axis that holds the cosmos together, a living link between gods, humans and the unseen worlds.

                The origin of the myth

The oldest accounts of Yggdrasil are found in the Old Norse writings The Poetic Edda and The Prose Edda, written down in Iceland in the 13th century but with roots in much older oral traditions. The name is believed to mean “Odin’s horse” (Yggr is one of Odin’s many names and drasill means horse) – a poetic allusion to Odin once sacrificing himself in the world tree, hanging for nine nights, to find the wisdom of the runes.

                The Nine Worlds

Yggdrasil's branches and roots unite all nine worlds in Norse cosmology:

Asgard, the realm of the gods

                Middle-earth, the world of humans

                Vanaheim, god realm of fertility

Jotunheim, the land of the giants

Alfheim, home of the light elves

                Svartalfheim/Nidavellir, the dwarven forges

                Muspelheim, the realm of fire

Nifelheim, the world of ice and cold

Hel, the realm of the dead

Each world has its place in the branchwork or at the roots, and together they create the cosmic order.

Three sacred roots and their sources

Yggdrasil's three largest roots reach to Urd's well in Asgard, Mimer's well in Jotunheim, and Hvergelmir in Nifelheim.

At Urd's well, the Norns – the goddesses of fate – watch over the tree, watering it with sacred spring water every day to keep it healthy.

Mimer's Well is the source of all knowledge, where Odin sacrificed one of his eyes for wisdom.

Hvergelmir is the icy spring in the underworld, where the dragon Nidhögg gnaws at the tree's roots and constantly threatens its existence.

                Life, death and eternal struggle

Despite its strength, Yggdrasil is constantly threatened by forces that seek to destroy it: the dragon Nidhögg, hungry deer that graze on its branches, and the oak Ratatosk – the squirrel that runs up and down to spread conflict between heaven and underworld. Yet the tree stands unshakable, an eternal sign of the persistence of life.

                Yggdrasil in Ragnarok

According to the prophecies, Yggdrasil will tremble in the world's final battle, Ragnarök, but will not fall. From its protective branches, the surviving humans, Lif and Lifthrasir, will find refuge and give rise to a new world after the end.

                Symbolism and heritage

Yggdrasil is a symbol of unity, balance and eternal life. It shows that all living things are connected – gods, humans, animals and nature. For the Vikings, it was a reminder of cyclical forces: creation, destruction and rebirth.

                In modern times

Today, Yggdrasil adorns jewelry, tattoos, and art as a sign of strength, wisdom, and cosmic harmony. It still carries the message that every action, every life, is part of a larger network – a tree that never dies, only changes.

                Summary:
Yggdrasil is more than a fairy tale. It is a living metaphor for the universe, a story of courage, wisdom and the infinite power of nature – a tree that stands steadfast through all the storms of time and reminds us that all life is interconnected.
