          Valknut – History and Meaning

Valknut, the three intertwined triangles, is one of the most enigmatic and powerful symbols in Norse mythology. The name comes from the Old Norse: valr means “the fallen” and knut means “knot”. Literally, Valknut means “knot of the fallen” and points to the deep connection to struggle, death and the journey to the afterlife.

          Archaeological traces

Depictions of the symbol can be found on many runestones and grave finds from the Viking Age, including the famous Stora Hammars-stenen on Gotland. There, the Valknut is often seen together with Odin, the god of war, wisdom, and magic. These finds indicate that the Valknut functioned as a sacred protective sign for warriors and as a symbol of the transition between life and death.

          Connection to Odin

In the sagas, Odin is called the "lord of the fallen", the one who leads warriors to Valhalla. Valknut stands as a symbol of Odin's power to bind or free souls and for his ability to move between the worlds. It thus represents the soul's journey from the mortal world to the spiritual plane.

The meaning of the three triangles

The three interconnected triangles can be interpreted in several ways:

          - Like past, present and future – the flow of eternal time.

          - Like life, death and rebirth, a reminder of the endless cycle of existence.

          - Some interpret them as the three worlds: Asgard (the world of the gods), Midgard (the world of humans) and Hel (the underworld).

          For the Vikings

For Viking warriors, the Valknut was a symbol of courage and devotion. It was carved into swords, shields, and amulets to show readiness to face fate and seek Odin's protection in battle. It was less a decorative motif and more a spiritual promise to face death without fear.

          In modern times

Today, Valknut is appreciated worldwide – not only by followers of Nordic spirituality but also by people who want to express strength, destiny and inner freedom. The symbol stands for the courage to follow one’s own path, for the connection between this world and the next, and for the belief that each phase of life is part of a greater whole.
